Barry Mathis

Senior Director of Operations

I am privileged to serve Knox County as the Senior Director of Operations for the Property Assessor’s Office. My career in the assessment industry began in 1997 with the Blount County Property Assessor’s Office, where I held several positions including Assistant Assessor of Property. In 2012, I transitioned to the Knox County Property Assessor’s Office, focusing on resolving County and State-level appeals for all property types, with a primary emphasis on commercial and industrial appeals.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Maryville College and completed coursework through the University of Tennessee to achieve the Certified Public Administrator designation (CTAS). Additionally, I hold two assessment industry certifications and designations, TMA (Tennessee Master Assessor), and AAS (Assessment Administrative Specialist) through both the State of Tennessee and the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO).

Outside of work, I enjoy being active in my church, sports officiating, and spending time with family and friends.
