Frequently Asked Questions

Why did I get a sales questionnaire? Sales Questionnaires are required by the state to be sent whenever a property's ownership changes. This can be a typical sale, or:

  1. A private sale
  2. A deed/ownership transfer
  3. Moving property to a trust or estate

What if I want to see my property lines? Refer to the map on KGIS for general property lines. If exact information is needed, a survey will be required. Our office does not provide surveys, nor can we make outside recommendations.

How can I find out my property value? You can use our Property Lookup system to find out your value as well as other various pieces of information.

Will I be notified when my assessed value changes? Yes, you will always be notified via mail about an assessment change.

What if I made an addition or remodeled? If you have made changes to anything on your property, you can request a field review by an assessor here or we will make appropriate adjustments when investigating permit status. After finalizing updated information, we will determine the new property value.

Where do I pay my taxes? Property taxes (real or personal) are paid through the Trustee, in-person or online. Trustee website

When will Assessors inspect my property? With our 2-year reappraisal schedule, we will inspect your property every other year unless:

  1. It is requested by you (request here)
  2. We check on a permit's progress
  3. Discovery of recent changes; updates, demos, etc

Why isn't my name on the property I just bought? Once deeds are recorded at the Registers' office, we then make the transfers in our system. This can take up to a week after recording for the deeds to be processed by our office and public information updated. If it has been longer than a month and information is incorrect, contact us online or call us at 865-215-2360

Can I dispute my property value? If you have a disagreement about your value, you can appeal to the County Board of Equalization when they meet in June.

How long is the Reappraisal Cycle? Currently, Knox County is on a 2-year schedule.

What is Real vs Personal Property? Real property is real estate (land & buildings) while personal property is any business asset (machines, vehicles, etc.)

What if I made an error on my Personal Property Schedule? If your schedule was turned in on time, it can be amended and re-submitted no later than Sept. 1st of the following year.

Do I file & report leased equipment? Yes, leased equipment is reported on the back of the personal property schedule form.

How are Mobile Home Parks reported & taxed? Mobile Home Park owners that rent empty lots or lots with homes to tenants must fill out a mobile home report and file it by April 1. The parcel owners can decide how to distribute property tax levy. For more info, read here.
